FlagWalk is the creation of a unique walking route
connecting Yaletown and South Granville, two of Vancouver's
truly unique neighbourhoods. The FlagWalk pathway
spans a total distance of 3.74 kms and features the
flags of countries participating in the 2010 Winter
Games. FlagWalk FAQ's Won't people be offended by walking on the flag? No. these are not flags.
These decals are round, to depict the world, since we are inviting the world to the 2010 Games.
No country in the world has a round flag.
The artwork and colours chosen are very respectful of the Flags, and as true as possible to their design. We have done significant research to ensure everyone can be proud of the symbol that represents each country.
The decals have been installed to leave plenty of room for pedestrians to walk around them, if they choose.
The Cdn maple leaf appears on many products especially on Canada Day, including shoes, jackets, underwear, chairs and cupcakes. We wear it, sit on it, walk on and eat depictions of our flag.
How many countries are represented on FlagWalk? Nearly 80 countries are represented, but only
the countries that will likely be bringing a team
to the 2010 Games. Each country is on FlagWalk more
than once. Since FlagWalk is being installed before
all the countries have finished qualifying for the
Olympics, we may have to install a few more decals.
What is the route? From BC Place Stadium, through Yaletown to
David Lam Park and over the Granville St. Bridge to
16th Ave. There are 450 decals on FlagWalk. The route
is 4km long and takes about 35minutes to walk.
How was the route chosen?
As a wayfinding route to connect pedestrians with some of the downtown Olympic venues, through 2 great neighbourhoods.
What order are the decals put down in? Alphabetical, beginning at BC Place stadium.
Additional decals have been put down on some street
corners, and if a BIA member sponsors a particular
one.
How are the decals installed? What is the material?
The decals are produced from a non-skid, durable 3M material that is industrially glued to the pavement.
Is this a City or VANOC project?
No. this is a community partnership between two BIA areas; South Granville and Yaletown. The project is funded by the business community of these 2 neighbourhoods.
